I know online it may seem like everyone is living their best life all the time. No bad days, no posts showing them rotting in bed all day because they didn’t have the energy to get up. But we all know that social media is more of a highlight reel of our lives, right?
Everyone gets into a little funk every now and then. None of your usual hobbies interest you, none of the food you have at home or that can be delivered sounds appealing. You’re just in a weird mood, sometimes with a good explanation as to why, and sometimes there’s no logical explanation behind it.
Here are four things that I like to do that help me when I’m in a funk — none of which include journaling because who has the energy for writing down and processing your feelings when you can barely get out of bed?
1. Laying on the floor and listening to a playlist that matches my mood
Okay, this one may seem kind of dramatic but it helps me accept where I’m at mentally and allow myself to feel all the feelings. I have a playlist called “In a Fucking Mood” that’s filled with angsty songs I connect with more when I’m in a funk. I’ll put my headphones on and flop down onto the floor then hit play. If I’m home alone, I skip the headphones and blast the music as loud as I want. Sometimes I’ll even pretend I’m in a music video for the song and act all dramatic and shit. It’s a great mood-booster.
2. Tidying up my space
Notice how I said tidying up instead of cleaning. No one wants to scrub the bathroom clean or vacuum or mop when they’re in a funk. Instead, try tidying things up a bit. Put away that pile of clean laundry that’s been sitting next to your dresser or closet for 3, 4, 5 days (I’m not judging, I do this too). Set a timer on your phone for 5 or 10 minutes and then wander about your home looking for things that aren’t where they should be and put them away. Once your time is up, see how you feel.
If you’re still feeling that funk, it’s okay to stop. But if you’re feeling good again and in the mood to keep going, do it! I always feel so much better after I’ve tidied things up a bit and my home feels a little neater.
3. Get some fresh air
I fear I sound like a broken record at this point. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again (and again, and again…), fresh air is the best air. Depending on how much energy or motivation you have, try going for a short walk. Leave your headphones at home so you can enjoy the sounds of the world around you. Breathe in that good, fresh air, and let your mind wander as you walk.
Don’t have the energy or motivation to go for a walk? No worries! Go sit outside for a few minutes, preferably in direct sunlight if it’s not too hot out. Take some deep breaths and simply observe what’s going on around you. If that’s also too much to ask, or if the weather isn’t nice enough for a walk or sitting outside, open a window near you and let the fresh air come in.
4. Do nothing
Yes, you read that right. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is nothing. Lay in bed all day, binge watch your favorite TV show or movies, or even sleep. If you can muster up the energy, I highly recommend starting a nice, hot shower and just sitting on the floor. Zone out for a bit and let the hot water relax you.
No matter what you do, or don’t do, it’s okay to not be at your best every day. Just take things one day at a time, listen to your body, and do what’s best for you. And remember, the sun will always rise tomorrow (:
